Hand Tunneling

UIT constructed a 72″-diameter tunnel by hand using a jacked casing as a shield. The tunnel measured 72 LF under a BNSF railroad. Raveling soils and old embedded railroad materials were unexpectedly encountered during tunnel excavation. The soils were stabilized with injection grouting. The voids created by removing the railroad materials necessitated the installation of footers underneath the tunnel casing for support.
